Every time you enter website address in your browser the request is sent to your Internet provider that processes this request. So Google asserts that its DNS will work faster. The second reason to use Public DNS is safety. Malefactors can replace server names cache and direct you to malware sites. Using of Google Public DNS reduces this threat.

Alternative DNS: 8.8.4.4
